Project: 3D scanning for dentistry
  • Deliverables:
    • R&D report @Manufacturing stage : 1.00 Idea

This is the last stage of an R&D process. The output is a product, which is a functional thing. This process is about modifying the last and best working prototype, itself based on the best design, in order to fit manufacturing processes, and product design requirements, informed by a marketing research. The output is a production recipe.

This process is also known as Production Ramp-up: The product is made by using the intended production system. The purpose of the ramp-up is to train the workforce and to workout any remaining problems in the production processes. Products produced during production ramp-up are sometimes supplied to preferred customers and are carefully evaluated to identify any remaining flaws. The transition from production ramp-up to ongoing production is usually gradual. At some point in this transition, the product is launched and becomes available for widespread distribution. A postlaunch project review may occur shortly after the launch. This review includes an assessment of the project from both commercial and technical perspectives and intended to identify ways to improve the development process for future projects.

Signal needs and tell people how they can help.

Create a communication strategy and all the materials necessary for an outreach campaign. This campaign is designed to attract resources to the project. A crowdfunding campaign is one form of outreach that could fit here, but we need to think larger than that, to attract people with skills, spaces, equipment and tools, $ and more.

Comparing the product with other similar products and decide on the importance of features.
This process includes a market research as well as inclusion of early adopters in the design process.

Create as many concepts as possible, brainstorm as many Ideas as possible, be creative. Search internally (create new concepts) and externally (based on existing concepts). Always focusing on critical problems, exploring systematically to get an integrated solution building a constructive feedback.

  • Deliverables:

After the concept generation we have to select the best concepts to produce. For that we can build a criteria matrix referencing each of the concepts and weighting them. Rate and rank the concepts according to the outputs of the benchmark. If necessary, combine and improve different concepts (remove bad features and combine good qualities). After all as an output we are gonna have the best concept that may be more than one.

Keep in mind that this is a reflective process that should be in continuous improvement.
